Sworn into office on January 2, 2005, Councilmember Kwame R. Brown hit the ground running to elevate the quality of life of all District of Columbia residents by focusing on improving education, stimulating the economy, reducing crime and reviving blighted areas in our neighborhoods. Councilmember Brown was later appointed Chair of the Committee on Economic Development because of his specialized background in small business development and determination to bring more local jobs and businesses to the District.

Since the beginning of his first legislative session, Councilmember Brown has worked to execute new ideas. A Washington native, Brown devotes his full-time and attention to being an active voice on the D.C. Council by proposing legislative actions that reflects the voice of the community. Pledging to develop initiatives that embrace a more family friendly atmosphere, Brown acts on his long-term desire to initiate dialogue to break the silence of domestic violence, restore vocational education, and ensure equal access to quality healthcare services.

Kwame R. Brown was born on October 13, 1970, at Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, D.C. Brown graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and participated in the Mayor's Youth Leadership Program. Brown continued his education at Morgan State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing. He is a graduate of both the Minority Business Executive Program, & Advanced Business Executive Program at the Amos Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College and the Senior Executives in State & Local Government Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Brown resides in the Hillcrest community of Southeast Washington with his wife of twelve years Marcia, 6-year old daughter Lauren and 4-year old son Kwame II.
